IN HARMONY WITH NATURE
W.C. Handy Music Festival Goes Green!

Florence, Al…The W.C. Handy Music Festival is proud to announce it will include “green events” as it works in partnership with Keep The Shoals Beautiful and The City of Florence Recycling Center for the 2010 IN HARMONY WITH NATURE. These partnerships are an exciting step the W.C. Handy Music Festival is taking towards becoming “green” and encouraging The Shoals to do so as well, not only at the Handy events, but throughout the communities.

Keep The Shoals Beautiful (KTSB) under the auspices of Shoals Chamber of Commerce, will participate at the following events:  Rogersville Bluegrass Festival - Rogersville Recreation Park in Rogersville, July 15-17; Music Under The Tent - Carver Heights Recreational Field in Florence, July 23; Sax in the City – Wilson Park in Florence, July 23; W.C. Handy Music Festival Opening Ceremonies – W.C. Handy Home and Museum in Florence, July 25; Sunset Serenade Riverfront Park in Sheffield, July 26; Summer in Spring  Park - Spring Park, Tuscumbia, July 27; Blues on the Bluff – Standpipe Park in Sheffield, July 27;  Music & Food Fest – North Court Median in Florence, July 27; Cherry Hills Music Break – Cherry Hills Homes in Florence, July 28; St. Florian Summers - St. Florian City Park in St. Florian, July 29; Beale Street Blues – Lewis Field in Florence, July 29; Music On Third – Third & North Montgomery in Sheffield, July 30; and Riverside Jazz - McFarland Park in Florence, July 30.  Each will be a “Litter Free” event; attendees will be encouraged to recycle and properly dispose of litter to keep the sites clean.

The City of Florence Recycling Center joins KTSB in their sponsorship of “green events” during the W.C. Handy Music Festival.  The Recycling Center has been processing materials since 1987; it is one of the first programs in the state of Alabama. Today, materials collected include paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, metal cans, cooking oil, motor oil and electronics. “We would like to congratulate the Handy Festival on ‘going green,’ which is a great benefit to our city and represents the values and priorities of our area. It will create awareness, education and promote litter prevention and recycling.  Our ultimate goal is to reduce waste in the community” said Rachel Mansell, Education Outreach Coordinator for The City of Florence Recycling Center.  A popular event sponsored by The Recycling Center and Shoals Earth Month during the Handy Festival is “Jazz it up with Trash” – using “trash” such as old water bottles, cans, etc., to make instruments. Children (ages 3 and older) are encouraged to participate and learn how to make recycling fun. “Jazz it up with Trash” will be held at the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library on Monday, July 26 at 10 - 11 am.  Additionally, In Harmony With Nature and Where in the World will be featured in GeoBlues at The Children’s Museum of the Shoals on July 28 from 10 am - Noon. This delightful program will focus on the connection between geography and music segueing into creating and making music with recycled materials.
